Why I Hate Facebook

When I first joined Facebook, I thought, “Wow, this is way better than Friendster or MySpace.” Well, I initially said that because you can add some cool applications. These applications keep anyone occupied while online. For the first week I’ve had an account, I was hooked. I’ve become an “Add App” addict, trying out all the applications I can find. I’ve even invited almost everyone from Gmail account, oh yes, Facebook gives you an option to invite everyone from your contact list.
Anyway, there were times when I wasn’t able to login to my account. For some reason, a lot of people have started to add me, even if they are outside my Facebook network. I like the face that you can opt for people to just see your “limited profile”, where you can choose what your other friends can and cannot access on your account. I have about more than 10 people who are under this condition.
So, I decided not to check any of my online accounts for like 3 days. I believe I was doing important things at that time. Then I decided to check my account again. Whoa! I was poked so many times, so I poked back. What the… a gazillion of applications invite? Click, click, click. Accept. Ignore. Accept. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Until I just quit clicking and clicked on “Ignore All”.
I’ve summed up the reasons why I hate Facebook, and here they are:
- I can’t delete my own account.
- You cannot not add your surname.
- It disconnects you from the world
- You are OWNED.
- Your birthday cannot be in the year 1910.
- While it’s OK to get updates from friends…
- Apparently, I have OCD.
- Facebook does not want me to have friends.
- I always have to invite 20 friends.
- It is quite impersonal.
For some reason, Facebook doesn’t allow its users to delete their own accounts. You can only deactivate it, which is pointless, since you can still use it.
Well, I don’t like adding my complete name to any social networks, because, I don’t really like to be found by stalkers. Yes, I’ve had a share of a few…
Like I said, with all the clicking that you have to do, you’re bound to be hooked on your computer screen and mouse by accepting or ignoring some useless application invites.
If you take a look at their terms of use,
“When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content on the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.”
Now, isn’t that kind of scary?
Now, what if your grandmother wants to join Facebook? She has to lie about her age, and be born about 18 years ago. When you choose 1910 as the year of your birthday, you get an error message that says “Please enter your real birthday.” Duh.
I don’t really care if they’ve joined this group, or is now friends with this guy, or has fed her (fluff)Friend, or has posted a message on this other person’s Superwall. I want to know what they’ve done in relation to ME!
I took a quiz called “What Mental Disorder Do You Have?”, and its result tells me I have OCD. Wow, now, I don’t need to go a doctor for a psychiatric evaluation.
Adding someone just had to be complex. Okay, so someone invites me to be his/her facebook pal. I click on “Accept”, then this little popup box comes up and asks how I know this person. I choose one, then it asks me again why I chose that option. Gah. Now, if I choose, I don’t know this person. Then it will say, “Why are you friends with this person then?” Well, not exactly that, but, you get my drift.
Ok, now that’s no problem since I have 64 connections at Facebook. Anyway, there are loads of games that you can play at Facebook, but you can’t view your scores until you have invited 20 people to add that game application, too. It annoys me now when I get a gazillion app invites, so I know, among all those 64 people, someone’s bound to feel the same way. Most of the time, I just don’t find out what my score is.
I don’t ever get personal messages. Most of them are virtual teddies, or drinks, or sometimes I am virtually bitch-slapped, poked, or mooned and flashed! Facebook is supposed to be a social network, but I don’t really experience any social interaction. Friends, CALL ME!1
I guess, I’ve summed up some of the things I hate about Facebook. I wish I can delete my account NOW. I still think that Multiply is the best social network. Now, MySpace is another story. SPAM. That’s what MySpace is up to now these days.
Now that this is off my chest, I wish, I just wish, if the heavens just grant it, to have the developers of Facebook let me DELETE my account. PLEASE!

I’ve never had an account at Facebook and when I was first reading your blog I was almost persuaded to go create one. But now having read your full entry I think not. And its just awful that you can’t delete your own account.

i. hate. facebook.
i opened an account before only because this guy i met at a filipino basketball association game who lives in canada was a facebook-er and not much of a friendster/myspace user.
after talking to him through facebook for like a week, i decided to give it up.
it’s so complicated! and and and.. it’s just not as fun as friendster/myspace.

I’m starting to hate Facebook too. At first, I wanted to just add the friends that I really want to talk to and keep in touch with but then, people started making it a competition of “who has more friends”.
I hate how you have to send invites to people just to see your results and they always say “Send an invite to see your results. It’s totally worth it!” So now, I think I’ve done like 20 quizzes that I don’t the result to.
I don’t want to delete my account, necessarily, but it’d be nice if the developers would make a few MAJOR tweeks.

Hmm… I’ve never even bothered creating a facebook. Mainly because I’m already addicted to Myspace and that’s bad enough. haha. So it’s good to read a blog to keep people off such mindless sites. ha. ;]

Helga,
That’s true, but like I said, some quiz results I can’t get to because it does require inviting 20 friends.

Yes, Facebook was fine until the apps started.
I really don’t have time to vibrate hamsters or throw sheep or stupid stuff like that.

Wow, Dre. Thanks for this list. Now I really, really won’t join Facebook. My mom keeps inviting me these days but.. no.
And yes, no interaction at all. I can see just from the homepage that it’s so idle and… yea.

I think all facebook users agree with you, but as for the surname thing you cn just use only the first letter of your surname.. Or what?!
(Why I hate WordPress: if you a mistake (for example make a mistake in the anti-spam key) your message wil be deleted when you go back.. Argh!)

LOL. i totally agree. I do log-in once in a while, like in my other accounts, just to check if someone actually messaged me for something. Though that RARELY happens.
Oh, thank you for inviting me to use applications.

Meh… I’ve always preferred MySpace to Facebook, although both are shitty now-a-days. The way I see it, Facebook got ruined as soon as it started trying to become the next MySpace with all of these apps and pointless updates. (And MySpace got ruined with all the SPAM and layout-editing…)
That’s what I hate the most about Facebook — the pointless updates. You can’t even fart without having the entire world know!

This was definitely a good read for me. I have had friends who swear by facebook, but I’ve been on myspace for so long that it seemed pointless to start again somewhere. And those that mean the most to me only have a myspace account. However, I almost signed up.
I do have friends that swear by multiply also. But again, because those most important to me are on myspace, I chose to just skip multiply. I’m curious, though - how about the pros and con’s of multiply in a future blog post? (Unless you did that already.)
