Tell Me, When You Do
Jul 14, 2007 School
I have been complaining and telling my professors to tell our school administration that an anti-virus must be installed on our computers. It has been a pain to reformat our flash drives every time I hook it up on my computer. A year has passed and we still don’t have an anti-virus.
As a requirement for school, I bought a 120GB external hard drive. I had no choice but to bring it to school and use it. Everything was ok when I was using it, but when I got home, it just makes my computer display freeze, and it will hang for a long time. So I disconnected it a lot of times, then my computer would work fine.
The next day, I brought it to school again. When I hooked it up, it gave off an error message, saying that, it is unreadable. My professor offered to help fix it. I let him hook it up on his laptop, thinking that he would try to heal it with his anti-virus. I went back to my seat and waited. After a few minutes, he told me I can use it again because it’s fixed. Then he said, “I formatted it.” My jaw almost dropped to the floor!
Why the hell did he format my hard drive without asking me? I felt all kinds of emotions, and I just found myself crying because of anger. He tried to explain his side, and told me that my hard drive won’t work unless it is formatted. I was trained to fix both hardware and software, so I know that I can still get my files even if the hard drive is unreadable, but it’s a tedious process, but it can be done.
All the hard work I’ve done was deleted in just a few minutes, WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE! I was so angry that I just walked out the door and decided to go home. My mom wanted me to file a formal complaint, and I would, but it will be addressed to the school administration for being negligent to the students’ needs. An anti-virus software is a must for every computer, specially when it is networked. I just don’t understand why a computer school would overlook this, or should I say, intentionally overlooked this matter.
Up to now, I still can’t accept the fact that all my files are gone. The video I was developing, the flash movie I was making, my 3D Studio Max file, my databases, everything! My professor even tried to save his face by saying, “I hope Dré doesn’t think I formatted her hard drive.. I just tried to fix it.”
Duh.

Umm, couldn’t you just buy yourself an anti-virus program that can be installed and run directly from your flash drive?
My boss bought flash drives that came with a standalone anti-virus installed on them… and to my knowledge, they work great… and prevent an infected computer from infecting the flash media.
Yes, just Google it… you’ll find a lot of solutions and you’ll understand what I mean. They exist on the market.

OUCH! if that happened to me, I would have preferred that he left it “broken” instead of reformatting it to “fix” it.

I’m So sorry. I know I would have freaked out ande gone ballistic. And it’s revolting that he’s pretending he has no idea what’s going on. What a jerk! He deletes all your hard work and then take no responsibility for it. Good luck with everything, hope something bad happens to him.

I would be freaking PISSED. I think I would have probably ended up throwing something at him. And then saying “I hope she doesn’t think I formatted her computer” after he TOLD you that he did it? God.. I feel so bad for you. I hope you are able to retrieve your files.

Oh, no! That’s horrible! I use my flash drive to hold most everything I use on a day-to-day basis, so it’s portable and it doesn’t take up space on my computer. If I lost everything on it… I’d probably explode or something xD
I’m so sorry! D: I hope you can make up for what was lost.

Try installing Google pack into your hard disk. You may get it for free at:
http://pack.google.com/pack_installer_required.html
Among the useful tools in that package, they have a norton and pc tools that will protect your drive from most malicious software.
