Php100 For Your Vote?

Yesterday, the Philippine Local Election was held. I was one of the poll watchers for a very good candidate, Gilberto L. Igtiben. We were confident that our candidate for the Barangay Captain will win. But money does buy votes. I am worried for my community because the one who won is a member of a family of politicians who’s been known to practice corruption.
I remember moving in this community in 1994, but only in the last 3 years have I felt safer to walk alone in our community. You can even see that the streets are cleaner and are being maintained well. Before, I felt a great resentment towards my parents for making us move here. I left a lot of friends and a better school. I am afraid that the things that I resented the most, would go back.
Barangay Captain Gilberto Igtiben did a great job during his time. He was able to send out of school youths to school; built local infrastructures; provided free medicine; gave business opportunities to housewives; and he even gave me a chance to use my skills in digital graphics.
A measly Php100 for for your vote? How long can anyone spend this money? One day? Two days? HALF-A-DAY?! Why didn’t they think of the 3 years that they would have to deal with this newly elected official? That scum-of-a-b!@$%! They even harassed some of the election officers. My mother knows 2 election officers personally, and they were threatened to ride another vehicle with the ballot box and be taken to another place and get the ballots switched. That wasn’t the first time that happened. Politics is really dirty.
According to the local news, some local officials made this election a trial for the next national elections. A lot of communities were tagged to have had “Failure of Elections”. In Sulu, no election officers came because days before, running candidates tried to kill each other using machetes.
I can feel the sadness in the air. A lot of real voters are disappointed with the results. We were able bag positions for barangay members. Like Ace Servillon, who bagged the first position. All our candidates for Sangguniang Kabataan won. Still, it won’t be the same.
My mother will be not be working for the barangay anymore. It will be hard for everyone who loves Sir Igtiben to work for another official. Sir Igtiben have lots of plans, plans that will not be realized now. A lot of projects were lined up. I wonder what will happen now. I am depressed.
Maybe in three years, he won’t run for Barangay Captain anymore, maybe he will be the next Mayor of our community. I hope so.

nasa nature na yata ng mga politicians ang maging corrupt eh. i mean, not in general, but mostly. i guess Sir Igtiben isn’t one of them. siguro ok lang na mag break siya for being a barangay captain, and like u said, sana tumakbo sha for mayor next time.. mas okay yun diba. it’s just sad that money really can buy people. some don’t think ahead. i don’t want to say this but it’s true, nakaka suka yung ganon na tao (yung corrupt na tao na nanalo sa place niyo!) .. nakakahiya siya.

It’s a shame politics is such an ugly, dirty game when the lives and wellbeing of so many people rests in the hands of corrupt politicians. I really hope everything works out for the good.

Wow, thank you. Your blog entry was a real eye opener for me. I like to consider myself really worldly, but I too often get lulled into this sense of security and ‘boredom’ (though it’s not boring at all and boring suggests taking something for granted) of American life. hi.. nakakalungkot yung pangyayaring yun.. kasama ang mama ko sa womens club ng branggay san juan.. kasama din sya sa pangangampanya ni kap.. kahit anong pursigi ni kapitan na paunlarin ang san juan.. tinalo lamang siya ng pera na pinamimigay ng mga hinayupak na FELIX na yan para lang manalo at kamkamin na naman ang yaman na dapat ay para sa taong bayan..
