May 16, 2007 Daily Blurbs, Philippine Elections
I exercised my right 2 days ago. It was my first time to vote, and along with that, I was a poll watcher, too. I got up at 5am to get ready and walk to the precinct. By 7am, I stood in line to wait for my turn to vote. It took me about 10 minutes to finish writing all the candidates that I feel deserve to win. After casting my vote, I was on duty.
My sister, a neighbor and I were in charge of looking up people’s names on the master list and providing them of their precinct number. I discovered a lot of things while doing that. I realized that there are a lot of people from our neighborhood that are very honest. When they see the names of their relatives on the list, they inform us that they can’t vote because they’re either dead, out of the country, or is unavailable to vote. But I also discovered that there are names on the list that are doubled, or is still listed to vote on our area even if they have transfered to vote somewhere else. It’s a bit disappointing to actually see the list with false data. Tsk tsk…
Voting started at 7am and ended at 3pm. We started counting the votes by 4:30pm. Two of us we’re assigned to tally the votes as they were read out load by the chairman. We finished tallying the 92 ballots at 10pm. It’s disappointing to know that some voters didn’t fill out the ballot completely. Some were even blank.
I think the candidate that I voted for the mayoral position is not going to win, based on the results from neighboring municipalities. He won from ours. I do hope that after the counting is done, he would be declared as the winner. He has done a lot for our community. The flooding has lessened, streetlights has been installed on the main road, and I think that the community is much cleaner.I also noticed that more people are smarter voters now. I am so glad that the candidates for senators that I voted for are leading. The local actors who ran are way down below the unofficial results. I do hope that no hocus-pocus happens or we’re doomed!
I am so glad I survived. I got home at 3am! I didn’t go the the Municipal Hall anymore to bring the election returns. The coordinator is in charge of that and chose 3 other poll watchers to come along. I was dead tired. When I got home, I only had time to brush my teeth and change clothes. When I hit the bed, I just fell asleep immediately.
So far, the elections have been peaceful in our community. But, there are some unfortunate incidents that were shown on the news. Like the 2 teachers who died when a school building in Taysan, Batangas was engulfed by fire. One candidate for councilor also died of a heart attack after receiving a false text message saying that he lost, but in reality, he got into the top 12.
I just hope that the persons who deserve to win, wins!

Your comment link is kind of weird, it nearly didn’t work for me. FYI. I hope that things work out for the election. I don’t vote for town elections- I vote for president that’s it.
