No Read

For our NSTP class, we were assigned to teach 4th grade students to read. The students that were assigned to us are very slow learners. I mean, at this stage, they should already know how to read. I taught 3 girls, named Angelu, Mariel and Kristee.

Mariel has problems recognizing some letters. She can read some words, but I think it’s only by recognition. She doesn’t really know how to read them. Just like a little kid who would see the sign of McDonald’s and would easily say McDonald’s, even if the little kid doesn’t know how to read.

It’s sad to know that there are a lot of kids who pass to go to another grade level but not really learning the basics. I learned to read with comprehension when I was 4 years old, both in Filipino and in English. My mom taught me my ABCs and my 123s before I even started school. I am very grateful for that.

What disappointed me today, was when I asked the 3 girls what they want to be when they grow up, their answers shocked me for a moment. Angelu wants to be a nurse, and changed her mind, and now wants to just go abroad and work (as what?). Mariel wants to be a Japayuki (are foreign prostitutes in Japan). Gasps! This girl Kristee wants to go to Japan, too. All of them mentioned that they want to help their parents. I told them that in order for them to help their parents, is to learn the basics. Learn to read!

The public educational system in the Philippines should be improved. I am lucky that I went to a private school. I wish the government does something about this. The three-hour tutorial that we spend with these kids each week is not enough to better their situation. The teachers must be strict in providing their students all the tools that they need to learn the basics. In my opinion, they must not pass a student just because they feel sorry for them. It’s not right.

I wish things will be better tomorrow.

Stuff

I am working on a new theme for my blog. It’s light and simple. I think that my layout is looking too old and cluttered for me. I am going to be focusing more on the content. Besides, my creativity skills, I think, is on vacation. *laughs at self*

In school, I thought we were having our midterms for our 2D Concepts class, but it is scheduled for next Monday. We just had to, yet again, copy 2 logos using Macromedia Freehand MX. I think I am getting the hang of that program. I am more used to using Adobe Photoshop, and with Freehand it is more on using the Pen tool, which is actually great. I like learning new skills. *smiles*

It’s hard being a girl, really. I just got my period yesterday, and I suffer from Dysmenorrhea, so I really hate this time of the month. It’s hard to compose myself, pretending to the world that nothing hurts. It’s worse than a severe stomachache! Thinking that I would have to deal with this for lots of years just makes me wish I am a man. I’ve learned to live with it, but sometimes, I just have to rant about it. Gah.

My puppy, Boo-boo, is sooooo sweet! Whenever I get home, she always waits for me by the door and wags her cute little tail! I’m glad my cousin gave her to us :cheerful:

I miss Ryan…

Pearly Shell…

I attended Lexie’s 18th birthday celebration a few hours ago. She picked a Hawaiian theme, and when Ryan and I arrived at the venue, everyone was wearing Hawaiian/beach attire. They were also wearing leis that were given once you enter the venue.

I wore this dress that my cousin sent from the US. It still has the price tag on it when I took it from the closet. The color is lavender with different colored flower prints on it. I didn’t even know I have a dress like that because I just looked for something to wear today! Haha!

The venue’s motif were the colors of apple green and yellow, her favorite colors. There were also bubbles! Ryan and I were seated on Table 2, along with my classmates and one of Lexie’s friends. I was a part of the 18 candles, the well-wishers. It’s a good thing that they provided a pen and paper to write our thoughts on before the ceremony started.

I also went to the bank today to do balance transfers and found out I can do it online. Gah.

I really like the part where Lexie’s parents sang while she was entering the venue, on the red carpet. Lexie looked really beautiful. Her mom sings really well and her dad blew me away with his saxophone playing. :)

After dinner, Ryan and I had to split because he’s got to go to work. It would’ve been great if we’d stay until the end, but Ryan was super sleepy already. His work starts at 3:30am, so he wanted to catch some shuteye first.

I am so tired now. I woke up really early today and I didn’t get that much sleep last night. Plus, we’ve got our midterm exams this week and it starts tomorrow!

I am going to turn in now… :antok:
