Early Summer

This Saturday was supposed to be my second class, but fortunately, I don’t. A plan to go to Puerto Galera has been in our heads since my friends and I went to Baguio City. My decision to come with them was made at the last minute. Kat and I were chatting through email and she was persuading me to come with them to Puerto Galera. I really wanted to come with them, but there were two reasons that were stopping me. First, I have a class; and second, I don’t have enough money. But they were very persistent! They offered that they’d pay for everything for now. Technically, I owe them money. So the two reasons were, of course, disregarded. But of course, I had to let my parents know about my plans. It was 2:30am when I partly decided that I will come with them. I packed my bag which is good for an overnight stay and was in bed by 3:30am. At 7:30am, I woke up and looked for my mom. She was at the market, so I tried to call her, but she cancelled the call. I sent an SMS saying that my friends have been convincing me to go off with them to PG. She said that I should tell my dad first, so I also sent him a message. At first, he didn’t want me to go because of what has been happening since Friday and he was afraid that we might get kidnapped. But I was able to make him see that we will be safe. Finally, he agreed. I set off to meet them in Ayala. There were five of us, Kat, Juwan, Ian, Jen and me.

By 10am, we were at the bus to Batangas. At 12:30pm, we arrived at Ian’s home and ate the lunch that his parents prepared for us. My dad kept on sending me messages asking where I am. He was in Batangas because he works there and he said that he his colleagues are on the way their apartment and he wants to know exactly where I was. I met with him and I introduced him to my friends.

Ian, Kat, Jen, Me: on our way to Puerto!

At 2pm, we were off to the pier to ride a boat to Mindoro, where Puerto Galera is. By 3pm, we were in the boat. It was an hour and half ride to the island. It was an enjoyable ride, the sight was amazing! The water was so clear and there were even flying fishes. Too bad I wasn’t able to get my camera on time. Anyway, when we got to the island, we hurriedly looked for our room. We reserved a room at V.M. Resort. It is an air-conditioned room that has 2 single beds, a master bed, a TV and a bathroom. After getting settled in, we went out to walk on the beach. We took some pictures and sat on the sand to talk and enjoy the scenery. We had a round of San Mig Light at some tiki bar and ate balut.

Ian & I sporting our henna tattoos

Ian and I decided to sport henna tattoos. His, is some tribal symbol and I chose 2 Chinese characters, which hopefully, stands for “Wicked Soul”. We sat there for no more than 30 minutes and we had to let the ink dry for 2 hours before it can get wet. After getting tattoos, we looked for a place to eat. After dinner, we decided to walk off what we just ate, except for Juwan, who opted to go back in our room to rest. Ian and Juwan just came from a shift, so he was beat.

When we got back to the room, we watched the eviction night for Pinoy Big Brother and we went to sleep. I wasn’t able to sleep well because Jen kept on moving. I am a light sleeper, so a slight movement or noise around me, wakes me. We all woke up by 6am. Fixed ourselves up and had breakfast. Then, Juwan had this bright idea that we should go snorkeling. And yes, it was a fantastic idea!

My hair!

We went snorkeling for an hour and a half. The water was so clear and the coral reefs were so beautiful! There were different kinds of fishes that were swimming below us. Different sizes, different colors and swimming in different directions. I totally enjoyed that swim although it made me very tired. Then we went to another island where there were no people around except us. We took some pictures and we continued to swim and peeked in another world called the “sea”. I am so amazed by how they managed to preserve the place after so many years. I am so glad that I was able to experience that. After, our little adventure, we went back to our room and decided to have lunch. Then, we bought pasalubongs for home and I had my hair braided. At 3pm, we were headed to the beach to wait for the boat ride back to Batangas. We had Mocha Shakes first, and by 3:45pm we boarded the boat. We got to the pier by 6pm and rode the bus to Manila. By 9pm, I was home. Tired. Enjoyed

EDSA, Are You Just A Remnant of Democracy?

I woke up today thinking that this will just be a typical day, where the sun would rise from the east, as planned. But, I was so wrong. Well, the sun still rose, but when I turned on the television to entertain myself, the news bombarded me with the PGMA stating a State of National Emergency, where the police force is beating civilians, the people getting arrested, and our democracy going down the drain.

Where were you when the EDSA Revolution broke out?

I was just three years old then, but I was living in Makati City. I remember that my playmates and I were on the streets waiting for all the tora-toras to pass through the sky from where we’re standing. Of course, I was not completely aware of what was happening then, but I knew that it was out of the ordinary.

I also recall my father recording the events from our BetaMax. I saw guns and soldiers, war tanks, nuns, rosaries, people on the streets. I thought that it was just a bad movie that I was seeing. As it turned out, it was the start of the thing they called, Democracy.

When I was old enough to understand, I slowly learned about what happened at that time when all the tora-toras were flying overhead. I learned that the country was under the Martial Law and those people in EDSA helped get back the freedom we’ve lost.

Today is like a tiny spec of what could if this keeps up. I can’t imagine my life being the same as what my parents have gone through. I don’t want to turn on the television and see nothing because the government has taken over the TV networks. It’s a good thing we’ve got cable!

In my opinion, the people are using EDSA too much. Now, it seems like EDSA is overrated. The spirit of the People Power is slowly fading away. PGMA, is digging her claws so deep in Malacañang so that no one will take her place. I have never believed in her, so why start now? I am worried that this country not have a better future. I just hope that we, as a people, should do our part.

Feeling Better

After a night out with a few good friends, I was already feeling better. Yes, I agree with everyone who said that our family is the most important and the one who will be there until the end. Sometimes, it’s just hard.

Anyway, I have been reading tutorials about vector art. So far, I have managed to submit one in dA. You may view it here. What do you think? Is it worth continuing? That’s yet to be answered…

Last night, as I was watching the news, I can’t help but feel so sad that our kabababayans are suffering due to the landslide. A spark of hope came when “Signs of Life” were detected under the rubble. Please continue to pray for our kabababayans so that they may survive this tragedy.
